In post-independence India, particularly in Kerala, remarkable transformations have occurred to promote educational advancement among the visually impaired. Special schools have been established throughout Kerala through the efforts and interventions of authorities. The first Government School for the Blind was initiated in 1962 in the village of Olassa, Kottayam. In the academic year 2022-2023, this school celebrated its 60th anniversary, achieving remarkable results with visually impaired students attaining a 100% pass rate in the SSLC exams. Considering all the efforts and achievements throughout these years, the school has been honored as the Center of Excellence by the State Government. .
The school follows the Kerala State syllabus, offering education from primary to 10th grade. Students have the option to reside in the hostel for free education. The school admits both boys and girls with visual impairments, accepting children aged 5 to 10 into 1st grade and visually impaired children (with a visual impairment above 40%) studying in regular schools into their respective grades based on transfer certificates.
What sets this school apart is its alumni, who have become teachers at school and college levels, as well as employees in government and semi-government institutions. The school has nurtured numerous talents and paved the way for many children
The school has garnered recognition for its achievements, including winning the Overall Championship in the State Special School Arts Festival and other arts and sports events across the state all these years. The students also have a regular presence in All India-level chess competitions.
Government High School for the Blind, Olassa, is the first blind school established by the Kerala State Government. Over the past 60 years, the school has achieved a lot with the efforts of the staff and the support of officials, parents, and the public. In the academic year 2015-16, the school was promoted to a high school, becoming the only high school for the blind owned by the Kerala Government. The school has consistently achieved a 100% success rate in the SSLC examination. Recognizing all the efforts and achievements, the Kerala Government honored the school as the Center of Excellence. We expect to be converted into a research center for the blind within the next 4-5 years, where we can conduct research to support visually impaired people.
